Kamala Harris And Democrats Are Not To Blame For The Trump Victory

Like many millions of other Americans, I was shocked at Trump's victory in the recent election.

The voters knew that Trump was an inveterate liar, and voted for him anyway.

The voters knew Trump was a convicted criminal, and voted for him anyway.

The voters knew Trump had numerous criminal trials pending, and voted for him anyway.

The voters knew Trump was a racist, and voted for him anyway.

The voters knew Trump was a sex abuser, and voted for him anyway.

The voters knew Trump opposed reproductive freedom, and voted for him anyway.

The voters knew Trump played fast and loose with critical intelligence (including stealing and hiding top secret documents), and voted for him anyway.

Why did this happen? How could it have happened?

Some are trying to blame Kamala Harris. They say she was a bad candidate. Bullshit! The Democratic base loved her. She trashed Trump in their only debate. And she was a tireless campaigner who gave great campaign speeches.

Some are trying to blame President Biden - saying if he had dropped out earlier and allowed Democrats to have a competitive primary things would have been different. Nonsense!

And some are trying to blame the Democratic Party. They say the party is broken and has abandoned workers. That's also ridiculous!

The party raised over a billion dollars from small donors, and had a massive get out the vote effort. And it has been true to workers. It is the Republicans who have blocked all efforts to help workers.

The reason Trump won can be summed up in one sentence. A majority of voters didn't want to vote for a woman (misogyny) who was Black and Asian (racism).

I wish it wasn't true, but most voters were racists, misogynists, or both. That's a sad fact in a country that claims to believe in equality and opportunity for all.

How Is This Election Even Close?

The following is a small part of a post by Robert Reich:

These are the most stressful and nerve-wracking days I can recall. I vacillate between optimism and fear, hope and dread.

I don’t recall an election in which the two candidates represent such opposite poles of the American character.

Harris is the rule of law; Trump, lawlessness. Harris, inclusion; Trump, exclusion. Harris, decency; Trump, loathsomeness. Harris, the American Dream; Trump, the American nightmare.

Harris wants the best for the country; Trump wants the best only for himself.

I don’t need to go on. You know all this. The question is why doesn’t everyone else? That almost half of America appears willing to vote for Trump is itself shocking.

Humor Columnist Makes The Endorsement The Washington Post Wouldn't

The following is from the humor columnist of the Washington Post (Alexandra Petri):

The Washington Post is not bothering to endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election. (Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin and the founder and executive chairman of Amazon and Amazon Web Services, also owns The Post.)

We as a newspaper suddenly remembered, less than two weeks before the election, that we had a robust tradition 50 years ago of not telling anyone what to do with their vote for president. It is time we got back to those “roots,” I’m told!

Roots are important, of course. As recently as the 1970s, The Post did not endorse a candidate for president. As recently as centuries ago, there was no Post and the country had a king! Go even further back, and the entire continent of North America was totally uninhabitable, and we were all spineless creatures who lived in the ocean, and certainly there were no Post subscribers.

But if I were the paper, I would be a little embarrassed that it has fallen to me, the humor columnist, to make our presidential endorsement. I will spare you the suspense: I am endorsing Kamala Harris for president, because I like elections and want to keep having them.

Let me tell you something. I am having a baby (It’s a boy!), and he is expected on Jan. 6, 2025 (It’s a … Proud Boy?). This is either slightly funny or not at all funny. This whole election, I have been lurching around, increasingly heavily pregnant, nauseated, unwieldy, full of the commingled hopes and terrors that come every time you are on the verge of introducing a new person to the world.

Well, that world will look very different, depending on the outcome of November’s election, and I care which world my kid gets born into. I also live here myself. And I happen to care about the people who are already here, in this world. Come to think of it, I have a lot of reasons for caring how the election goes. I think it should be obvious that this is not an election for sitting out.

The case for Donald Trump is “I erroneously think the economy used to be better? I know that he has made many ominous-sounding threats about mass deportations, going after his political enemies, shutting down the speech of those who disagree with him (especially media outlets), and that he wants to make things worse for almost every category of person — people with wombs, immigrants, transgender people, journalists, protesters, people of color — but … maybe he’ll forget.”

“But maybe he’ll forget” is not enough to hang a country on!

Embarrassingly enough, I like this country. But everything good about it has been the product of centuries of people who had no reason to hope for better but chose to believe that better things were possible, clawing their way uphill — protesting, marching, voting, and, yes, doing the work of journalism — to build this fragile thing called democracy. But to be fragile is not the same as to be perishable, as G.K. Chesterton wrote. Simply do not break a glass, and it will last a thousand years. Smash it, and it will not last an instant. Democracy is like that: fragile, but only if you shatter it.

Trust is like that, too, as newspapers know.

I’m just a humor columnist. I only know what’s happening because our actual journalists are out there reporting, knowing that their editors have their backs, that there’s no one too powerful to report on, that we would never pull a punch out of fear. That’s what our readers deserve and expect: that we are saying what we really think, reporting what we really see; that if we think Trump should not return to the White House and Harris would make a fine president, we’re going to be able to say so.

That’s why I, the humor columnist, am endorsing Kamala Harris by myself!

The chart above reflects the results of the Howard University Poll -- done between October 2nd and 8th of 981 Black voters in the swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The margin of error is 3.2 points.

There has been some talk on cable news about how some Black voters are abandoning Kamala Harris. This poll shows that is probably not true.

Trumpist Fascism Can Be Defeated By Creating A Fair And Inclusive Economy

How can we keep a Trump-style fascism from rearing its ugly head in the future? Robert Reich has an answer. He believes we must create a fair and inclusive economy - an economy that gives all citizens an opportunity to thrive. Here is part of what he writes:

I also want to point up a central dilemma awaiting the nation if and when Harris wins: Trump loyalists will remain a major force in American politics. . . .

Almost exactly 30 years ago, I predicted that widening inequalities of income and wealth would create an American oligarchy powerful enough to rig the economic game against average working people. This would make average working people so angry at the unfairness and arbitrariness of the system that they’d be easy prey for demagogues who’d channel their anger into fury at immigrants, Black people, government officials, gay people, and others.

Sadly, I believe I was correct.

Obviously, an explanation for some phenomenon is not a justification for it. Understanding the roots of Trumpism doesn’t mean accepting Trumpism.

But when Harris wins, we will have to begin the hard work of creating an economy of shared prosperity in which it’s possible to succeed without a college degree and in which large swathes of America that have been virtually abandoned by industry gain new sources of growth and jobs.

Right now, it’s easy to sympathize with Hillary Clinton’s description of Trump voters as “deplorables,” but they are our fellow citizens and will continue to be our fellow citizens. Unless we change the circumstances that have made them fodder for Trumpism, we can expect trouble for many years to come.

Some of you may be saying to yourself: Let’s get Harris elected before we dwell on next steps.

The reason I bring this up now is in the hope we don’t become so infuriated with those who support Trump that, when Harris wins, we forget the bitter wellsprings that Trump exploited to get as far as he did. Because if nothing is done to change the system that got us here, future demagogues like Vance will almost surely exploit the same bitterness for their own selfish ends.

The strongest defense we have against a future of Trumpist fascism is a large and growing middle class comprised of people who, although they may have supported Trump, come to feel they have a stake in America.

Economists Say Trump Policies Will Cause More Inflation Than Harris Policies

The following is part of a post by Zeeshan Aleem at MSNBC.com:

Much of the Republican case against a Kamala Harris presidency has rested on the claim that she’s responsible for — and would continue — policies that caused eye-watering inflation for people during the Biden administration. But a new survey of economists, conducted by The Wall Street Journal, finds that most economists believe that former President Donald Trump would pursue a more inflationary policy regime.

The Journal polled 50 economists as to whether they believed Harris’ or Trump’s proposed policies would cause higher inflation and found that 12% said Harris and 68% said Trump, while another 20% responded there would be no material difference between the two. Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman described the coalescing around Harris as less likely to produce high inflation as “as close to unanimity as the profession gets.”

More striking still: That survey represented a broader consensus pinning higher inflation on Trump than an earlier version of the survey in July, which compared Trump with Biden, since Biden was still the expected Democratic nominee at that time. In that earlier poll, 16% of economists said Biden would cause higher inflation, 56% answered Trump, and 27% said it would make no material difference.

These survey results are damning for Trump, whose main pitch to voters outside of his diehard base is that his economic record is stronger than Biden and Harris’ — and that he alone can bring down high prices. And yet, the more economists are hearing about his plans, the more they’re convinced he’s more likely to cause prices to surge. . . .

The Journal’s poll is good news for Harris. Now a key task of the campaign is to make sure that ordinary citizens — especially the coveted low-information swing voter — understand that she should be the obvious preference for people worried about how expensive everything is
