Virginia Legalizes The Possession Of Marijuana

One by one, states are legalizing the possession of recreational marijuana. On Saturday, the Virginia legislature voted to legalize up to one ounce of Marijuana for recreational use. The measure now goes to the governor (who has said he would sign the bill).

This make Virginia the 16th state to legalize the possession of marijuana. The District of Columbia has also legalized it. The measure in Virginia will take effect on January 1, 2024 -- because they want the time to set up legal distribution (to prevent a black market of the gentle drug).

Here is how AP News is covering the story:

Virginia lawmakers gave final approval Saturday to a bill that will legalize marijuana for adult recreational use, but not until 2024, when retail sales of the drug would also begin.

With a compromise bill clearing the House and Senate, Virginia becomes the first Southern state to vote to legalize marijuana, joining 15 other states and the District of Columbia. The legislation now goes to Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam, who supports legalization. . . .

Under the legislation, possession of up to an ounce (28.3 grams) of marijuana will become legal beginning Jan. 1, 2024, at the same time sales will begin and regulations will go into effect to control the marijuana marketplace in Virginia.

Under a provision Senate Democrats insisted on, the legislation will include a reenactment clause that will require a second vote from the General Assembly next year, but only on the regulatory framework and criminal penalties for several offenses, including underage use and public consumption of marijuana. A second vote will not be required on legalization.

The Senate had sought to legalize simple possession this year to immediately end punishments for people with small amounts of marijuana, but House Democrats argued that legalization without a legal market for marijuana could promote the growth of the black market.

Biden Leads Trump In Florida, Arizona, And Virginia

The chart reflects the results of the Florida Atlantic University Poll -- done between May 8th and 12th of a sample of 928 Florida voters, with a 3.1 point margin of error.

This chart reflects the results of the Arizona Public Opinion Pulse Poll -- done between May 9th and 11th of a sample of 600 Arizona voters, with a 4 point margin of error.

This chart reflects the results of the Roanoke College Poll -- done between May 3rd and 16th of a sample of 563 Virginia voters, with a 4.1 point margin of error.

Many expect Virginia to go blue in November, but Florida and Arizona are battleground states that Trump cannot afford to lose.

Biden Has A Strong Lead Over Other Democrats In Virginia

This chart is from the Hampton University Center for Public Policy Poll. They questioned 1,126 registered voters who self-identified as Democrats between May 29th and June 6th, and the survey has a margin of error of 4.3 points.

Northam May Be Able To Survive His Scandal In Virginia

It would be an understatement to say Virginia Governor Northam has a problem. The revelation that his medical school yearbook page had an image of someone in blackface standing next to someone in KKK regalia has people questioning his sensitivity and judgement -- and many are calling for his resignation. Compounding his problem is that only 20% accept his explanation that he was not one of the figures in the photo and the photo appeared on his page in error.

But there are a couple of things in his favor -- that may allow him to finish his term as governor of Virginia. First is that a majority of Virginians accept the apology he made (53%). Second is that the Lt. Governor has even more serious problems than Northam has. He has been accused by two women of sex abuse and rape (which are real crimes and not just offensive conduct). And the third in line, the state's Attorney General, also has admitted appearing in blackface while in college. If Northam has to go, then so will he.

He's not out of the woods yet, but Virginians are split now over whether he should resign (47% to 47%). And what may surprise you, Blacks in Virginia say he should not resign by a 21 point margin (58% to 37%).

This latest polling, and the problems of other ranking state officials may combine to let Northam finish his term as governor. However, I would bet on him being able to get re-elected. Surely, Virginia can find someone qualified that doesn't have skeletons in his/her closet.

These charts are from a new Washington Post / Schar School Poll -- done between February 6th and 8th of 706 Virginia residents, with a 4.5 point margin of error.

Virginia Governor (And Democrat) Northam Must Resign

The photo above (from The Virginian-Pilot) is from the Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook page of Ralph Northam. Mr. Northam is currently the governor of Virginia. He was elected on the Democratic Party ticket. This yearbook was not published in the 1950's (when racism was commonplace in Virginia), but in 1984 when any decent American should have known that appearing in Blackface or a KKK costume was inexcusable.

When the photo was first made public, Northam owned up to it and apologized, saying:

"Earlier today, a website published a photograph of me from my 1984 medical school yearbook in a costume that is clearly racist and offensive. . .decision I made to appear as I did in this photo and for the hurt that decision caused then and now. This behavior is not in keeping with who I am today and the values I have fought for throughout my career in the military, in medicine, and in public service."

Sadly, he has now backtracked. Now he claims that he was not in either the Blackface or the KKK costume, that the photo was placed on his page in error, and that he did not know what appeared on his page (since he did not buy a copy of the yearbook). I find that very hard to believe. Even if he did not buy a copy, he very likely knew what appeared on his own page.

Is Northam a racist? I don't know. But at the very least, he has an extreme lack of sensitivity regarding racial issues. And either racist beliefs or the lack of sensitivity to racial issues would be grounds for a resignation.

The Republicans have called for Northam to resign. That's more than a bit disingenuous, since they have spent the last few years defending actions as bad, or worse, by their own politicians (lying, pedophilia, racism, religious bigotry, homophobia, rape, drunkenness, sex abuse, etc.). If Northam was a Republican, I have no doubt they would be defending him.

But I am not a Republican. I am a Democrat. And being a Democrat, I must demand the same high standards of politicians from all political parties (and Independents). This yearbook page is indefensible, and his lying about it just makes the situation much worse.

Governor Ralph Northam MUST RESIGN!

N. Jersey & Virginia Voters Took Trump To Woodshed Tuesday

(Caricature of Donald Trump is by DonkeyHotey.)

Donald Trump (being the narcissist that he is) thought the elections on Tuesday night were all about him -- and decided that Gillespie had lost in Virginia because the didn't embrace Trump enough.

Trump is right about one thing. The elections were in large part about him -- a rebuke of him. The voters took Trump out behind the proverbial woodshed, and they gave him a thorough whuppin'. Trump supporters showed up, but there were overwhelmed by the anti-Trump sentiments of most voters.

Here is how Steven Shepherd describes it in Politico.com:

This one was for Donald Trump.

Exit polls revealed an unmistakable anti-Trump backlash Tuesday, as Democrats won resounding victories in governors races in Virginia and New Jersey.

Majorities of voters in both states disapproved of the job Trump is doing as president, with significant numbers of voters in each state saying Trump was a reason for their vote. And far more of those voters said they made their choice to oppose Trump than to support him.

It’s not uncommon for the president’s party to lose the off-year Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races in the first year of the new administration. Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush also saw the opposition party sweep both races a year after their first elections.

But what is unusual about Tuesday night is the extent to which the two races were about Trump. And the stark results cast fresh doubt on the health of Republican majorities in the House and Senate, in addition to gubernatorial races in next year's midterm elections.

Trump’s approval rating in Virginia was just 40 percent, according to the exit poll. Among the 57 percent of voters who disapproved of Trump’s job performance, Democrat Ralph Northam beat Republican Ed Gillespie, 87 percent to 11 percent.

The intensity gap strongly favored Northam, too. Nearly half of Virginia voters, 47 percent, strongly disapproved of Trump — and Northam won 95 percent of that vote. In other words, nearly 45 percent of the votes cast on Tuesday were from strong Trump disapprovers who voted for Northam.

Half of Virginia voters said Trump was a reason for their vote — with twice as many saying they were voting to oppose Trump (34 percent) as to support him (17 percent). Northam won 97 percent of voters for whom opposing Trump was a factor. . . .

The numbers were even worse for Trump in bluer New Jersey. His approval rating there was only 36 percent, compared with 63 percent who disapproved — with 54 percent of voters strongly disapproving. Only 11 percent of voters said they were voting to express support for Trump. Nearly three times as many voters, 28 percent, said they were voting to oppose Trump — and Gov.-elect Phil Murphy won 96 percent of them.

The Charlottesville Murder Was A TERRORIST ACT!

The vile person pictured here is James Alex Fields, Jr.

He is not a muslim (and probably claims to be christian). He is not an Arab (but a White person). He is not a foreigner (but was raised in Kentucky and now lives in Ohio).

But one thing we do know about him -- he is a terrorist! He intentionally killed and wounded people to further his vile political cause (white supremacy) -- and that is terrorism.

The question I have, and it's an important one for this country, is why Donald Trump refuses to call it terrorism. When muslims did the same thing (drove a car into a crowd) in Paris and London, Trump was quick to label it as terrorism. Why is he so silent about this terrorist act? Is it because it was done by a white male, a registered Republican, and a racist white supremacist -- like many others in his base of voters?

Is Trump afraid he'll lose votes by calling out the racism and hate displayed by Fields, or is he sympathetic to those racist views? Is it both?

Trump has been uncharacteristically silent about this act of domestic terrorism. Until he corrects this, it will be a dismal (and un-American) failure of leadership. The truth is that Americans have much more to fear from domestic terrorists like Fields than any foreign muslim terrorists. Trump's ignoring of that fact, and failure to call out this domestic terrorism, says a lot about his character (and that of his administration).

Charlottesville Shows Racists In U.S. Are Getting Bolder

On Friday night, and again on Saturday morning, hundreds of KKK members, White Supremacists, militia members, and other racists gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was the largest gathering of racists in decades -- and shows that perverse movement is still large and is getting bolder.

Why are they now coming out from under their rocks and are no longer ashamed to openly spread their hate? It's because they believe they have a friend in the White House -- and that his election means a lot of Americans agree with them. They are wrong, and it's time for decent Americans to stand up and say so.

Perhaps the best article on the sick racists that showed up to spread hate in Virginia was written by John Pavlovitz on his own blog. I believe what he has written deserves as wide a readership as possible, so I repost it below.

As a writer and pastor, my job is to weave together words so that those words will hopefully reach people in their deepest places; to frame the experience of this life in a way that is somehow compelling or creative or interesting, causing them to engage with the world differently than before.
But there are times when to do this would be actually be a disservice to reality, when any clever wordplay would only soften the jagged, sickening truth; when clever turns of phrase might succeed in obscuring the horrid ugliness in front of us.
Sometimes we just need to say it without adornment or finessing.

This is racism.

So I’m saying it.
We are not with you, torch-bearers, in Charlottesville or anywhere.
We do no consent to this.

So you can kiss our diverse, unified, multi-colored behinds because your racism and your terrorism will not win the day.
Believe it.

Latest Polls Show The Blue States Solidly Behind Clinton

Donald Trump is having trouble trying to keep some of his red states in the fold (Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina). Hillary Clinton doesn't have that kind of problem with states normally considered blue states.

The chart above reflects the latest polls in 10 blue states -- California, Virginia, Oregon, Maryland, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maine, Rhode Island. Clinton leads in all of them, and is expected to carry them rather easily in November. That's good, because it allows her to put more emphasis on the swing states.

NOTE -- You can click on the state name to get the poll dates, sample size, and margin of error.

Virginia Voters Prefer Clinton By 11 Points Over Trump

This chart shows the results of the newest Washington Post Poll -- done between August 11th and 14th of a random sample of 888 registered voters in Virginia, and has a margin of error of 4 points. It shows Hillary Clinton with a solid 11 point lead over Donald Trump.

Presidential Polls In Florida, N. Carolina, Virginia, Colorado

Chart was made from a recent NBC News / Wall Street Journal / Marist Poll -- done between August 4th and 10th. A random sample was done of 1,012 voters in Florida, 1,030 voters in North Carolina, 1,026 voters in Virginia, and 1,037 voters in Colorado. The margin of error is 3 points for Colorado, and 3.1 points for the other three states.

This is not good news for "the Donald". If he loses Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia, there really is no path to 270 electoral votes for him. Currently he trails by 5 points in Florida, 9 points in North Carolina, 12 points in Virginia, and 12 points in Colorado.

Presidential Polls In Virginia, Nevada, And Arizona

Chart is from a CBS News / YouGov Battleground Poll -- done between August 2nd and 5th of a random sample of 1,181 Virginia voters, with a margin of error of 3.7 points.

Chart is from a CBS News / YouGov Battleground Poll -- done between August 2nd and 5th of a random sample of 993 Nevada voters, with a margin of error of 4.6 points.

Chart is from a CBS News / YouGov Battleground Poll -- done between August 2nd and 5th of a random sample of 1095 Arizona voters, with a margin of error of 4.8 points.

Hillary Clinton is doing very well in Virginia -- with a 12 point lead over Donald Trump. Nevada and Arizona are much closer. Clinton has a 2 point lead in Nevada and Trump has a two point lead in Arizona. Both of those margins are well within the poll's margins of error, meaning those two states could go either way. Nevada was expected to be close, but Arizona was supposed to be solidly in the GOP camp. The fact that it isn't should worry Trump supporters.

Clinton Is Leading In Four Important Battleground States

This chart reflects the results of a new NBC News / Wall Street Journal / Marist Poll -- done between July 5th and 11th of a random sample of 794 registered voters in Colorado (moe 3.5 points), 871 registered voters in Florida (moe 3.3 points), 907 registered voters in North Carolina (moe 3.3 points), and 876 registered voters in Virginia (mow 3.3 points).

It shows Hillary Clinton leading the presidential race in all three states over Donald Trump -- by 6 points in Colorado, by 5 points in Florida, by 6 points in North Carolina, and by 7 points in Virginia. This is important because if Trump is to win the White House, he must carry these states (especially Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia).

Southern "Super Tuesday" States Solidly Behind Clinton

Tomorrow, the Super Tuesday states will vote for their presidential choice. And just like in South Carolina, the Southern states voting tomorrow are solidly behind Hillary Clinton's candidacy for the Democratic nomination. She has a 26 point lead in Tennessee, a 20 point lead in Virginia, a 28-34 point lead in Georgia, and a 21-24 point lead in Texas. That's what the two latest polls of those states shows.

The NBC News / Wall Street Journal / Marist Poll:

Texas (Feb 18-23) 381 likely voters (5.0 point moe)

Georgia (Feb 18-23) 461 likely voters (4.6 point moe)

Tennessee (Feb 22-25) 405 likely voters (4.9 point moe)

The CBS News / YouGov Battleground Poll:

Texas (Feb 22-26) 750 likely voters

Georgia (Feb 22-26) 492 likely voters

Virginia (Feb 22-26) 471 likely voters

New Dem Polls: Georgia, Massachusetts, Virginia, & Florida

Georgia, Massachusetts, and Virginia will all vote in three days (March 1st). Florida will vote two weeks later (March 15). These are the latest polls on the Democratic presidential nominating race in those four states.

Georgia - WABE Poll (Feb 22-24) 400 likely voters (4.1 point moe).

Massachusetts - WBUR Poll (Feb 21-23) 418 likely voters (4.9 point moe).

Virginia - Roanoke College Poll (Feb 16-24) 415 likely voters (4.8 point moe).

Florida - Quinnipiac University Poll (Feb 21-24) 476 likely voters (4.5 point moe).

Florida - Public Policy Polling (Feb 24-25) 388 likely voters (5.0 point moe).

Massachusetts is the real surprise. Hillary Clinton has had large leads in Georgia, Virginia, and Florida for quite a while. But a couple of weeks ago, Bernie Sanders was leading Massachusetts. It now looks like Clinton may be turning the tide in that state. It would be devastating for Sanders to lose Massachusetts.

Virginia also holds its primary on March 1st -- and this new poll from Monmouth University shows that could be a very good night for Hillary Clinton in that state. Clinton holds a 27 point advantage over Bernie Sanders.

The Monmouth University Poll was done between February 22nd and 24th of a random sample of 302 likely Democratic voters, and has a margin of error of 5.6 points.
