As a graduate of a Texas Methodist college and a DFW metroplex resident, I could not ignore this story about a sister school. The Awards and Recognition Association annually honors a football player for good sportsmanship both on and off the field. This year they have made an exception, and are giving the award to the entire Southern Methodist University football team.
It seems that when hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, it hit the campus of Tulane University hard. SMU and Tulane are both in Conference USA, and some schools would have seen this as an opportunity to get a leg up on a rival. But not the SMU football team.
The SMU footballers stepped forward and hosted the entire Tulane football team for three weeks. They arranged for the Tulane team to stay in a hotel near the SMU campus, and opened their practice facilities and weight room to the Tulane team. Then when SMU coaches learned Tulane had lost their recruiting files in the hurricane, they even opened their recruiting files and shared them with Tulane coaches.
Spike Dykes, former Texas Tech coach and awards panel member, said, "When I read about it I thought it was the most unbelievable thing I heard. It seems cosmopolitan, but it's a big deal. You're talking about hosting a team of over 100 people."
I'm sure most Texans are proud of SMU today. I know I am.
