The crown (pictured above) for stupidest politician in the United States used to be the sole property of the state of Texas (where stupidity seems to be a requirement to hold public office). But in the last few years several other states have given Texas a run for the money -- states like Oklahoma, Arizona, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, and lately even Wisconsin. A couple of years ago, Arizona snatched the crown away when Governor Brewer signed SB1070 -- a law so stupid that no other state could equal it.
In 2011, Wisconsin came out of nowhere to win the crown as their governor signed a law that denied collective bargaining rights to employees of that state. This year's crown looked like it was coming down to a battle between the governors of Florida and Louisiana -- Florida for doing more to supress voting than any other state, and Louisiana for passing an $11 million voucher program for private religious schools. But in the waning moments of 2012, an obscure politician from Texas came forward and said something so incredibly stupid that the crown must come back home to the Lone Star State.
That politician is District 12 State Representative Kyle Kacal (a Republican from Brazos County). Kacal was speaking in reference to possible gun restrictions after the tragedy in Connecticut, and here is the idiotic statement that won him the crown:
"I've heard of people being killed playing ping-pong -- ping-pongs are more dangerous than guns," he said. "Flat-screen TVs are injuring more kids today than anything."
Yes, you read that right. This fool says that "ping pongs" (not sure if he meant balls or paddles) kill more people in the United States each year than guns do. He then went on to say that guns don't kill people, people kill people. I guess that doesn't apply to inanimate objects like ping pong balls, ping pong paddles, and flat-screen TVs though, because he seems sure that they kill people.
Folks, that is not a simple brain-fart. That is a complete lack of any brain activity at all. I doubt he ever goes anywhere near a doctor -- to avoid being officially declared to be brain dead and given a proper burial.
Kacal has now set the mark very high for winning the Stupidest Politician Crown, and it will be very hard for politicians in other states to top that. But I have faith in Republican politicians, and I'm sure that one of them will do or say something even stupider in 2013. There seems to be no bottom to the Republican barrel.
NOTE -- For those of you who wonder what a politician that stupid looks like, here is a picture of Rep. Kacal:
I lived in TX, off and on for about 12 years from the 1950s through the 1970s, in San Antonio, Austin, Houston, San Angelo, & New Braunfels. Nothing has changed and nothing is gonna' change there. Texans consider their state to be the biggest and the best in everything (especially executions). They are still frontiersmen with guns and a mindset to match the 'wild west" image. Pity all the Californians that have moved to Austin thinking that Austin IS Texas. Austin is the most liberal place in the state. (Even Austin merchants sell t-shirts with the inscription...KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD.) Traveling outside Austin is a real culture shock, especially for those from states in the southeast region. Texas is an anachronism.
