Judge Rules Terrorist Should Be Freed

Luis Posada Carriles has been in jail in a federal detention facility near El Paso, since he was arrested in Miami last year for entering this country illegally. Posada is Cuban and is a naturalized citizen of Venezuela. Venezuela has asked for Posada to be returned to them, because he is charged there with the bombing of a Cuban airplane leaving Caracas in 1976.

A federal judge has already ruled that Posada is in this country illegally, and should be deported. However, the Bush administration has refused to send Posada to either Venezuela or Cuba, stating the belief that he would be tortured. The U.S. government doesn't mind torturing Iraqis and Afghanis, but the rules change when it is someone our government agrees with.

The country has not had much luck finding a country for Posada. Several countries have refused to take him, including Canada, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Mexico, and El Salvador. Now a federal magistrate has ruled that Posada should be released while he is waiting to be deported. That is hard to believe. A U.S. judge is wanting to release a terrorist, who is in our country illegally, and who has been ordered deported.

This is one reason why much of the world no longer trusts the United States. We say we are opposed to terrorists, but then act to protect terrorists that we like. Most of the world knows that ALL terrorism is wrong, and not just the people we don't like. Posada should be extradited back to Venezuela to stand trial for his terrorist activities. Protecting him just makes the U.S. look two-faced.
