Trump Popularity Drops Among Republicans

Last month Donald Trump shot to the head of the Republican field of possible presidential candidates on the strength of his "birtherism". Several different polls had him either leading or near the top. A Public Policy Polling survey actually had him with a 9 point lead over Huckabee (and even more over Romney and Palin). He had 26% to Huckabee's 17%.

But it looks like the president's release of his "long form" birth certificate has chopped him off at the knees -- either that or Republicans just didn't take long to tire of his ridiculous antics and ego. A new Public Policy Polling survey shows he has dropped precipitously in popularity among Republicans. The poll was taken May 5th through May 8th of 610 Republican primary voters (and has a 4 point margin of error). Here are the results:

Mike Huckabee...............19%
Mitt Romney...............18%
Newt Gingrich...............13%
Sarah Palin...............12%
Ron Paul...............8%
Donald Trump...............8%
Michele Bachmann...............7%
Tim Pawlenty...............5%
Someone else...............11%

This poll is backed up by a new Gallup Poll on the favorability ratings of the Republican candidates regarding their Positive Intensity Score (PIS = favorable rating minus unfavorable rating). This poll was taken between April 25th and May 8th of 1,500 Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents (with a 3 point margin of error). Here is how the candidates fared (with the average PIS being 13):

POSITIVE INTENSITY SCORES

Mike Huckabee...............24
Michele Bachmann...............20
Herman Cain...............20
Sarah Palin...............18
Tim Pawlenty...............16
Ron Paul...............14
Mitt Romney...............13
Rick Santorum...............13
Newt Gingrich...............11
Gary Johnson...............3
Donald Trump...............0

Looks like it may be over for "the Donald". I know that will disappoint a lot of Democrats, but cheer up -- there are still a lot of nuts in the race with a chance to win the nomination.
